Chicago still in the Running

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge effectively blew away two heavy clouds Friday that had been hanging over Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Games at the SportAccord meeting in Denver. A rancorous dispute about whether the United States Olympic Committee gets an unfair share of international television and sponsorship revenue was sidelined for now, as Rogge said the negotiations for a new pact would be put off until 2013. The decision came after what he described as productive talks this week with the USOC, Chicago’s partner in the 2016 bid. Additionally, Rogge said Chicago’s limited government financial guarantees would by no means be a deal-killer for its bid. For more on this story from the Chicago Tribune, click here. A Little Denver History

In 1976, Denver became the first city in history to leave the Olympic Committee standing at the altar. The Mile-High City was actually awarded the bid, only to have the voters turn it down due to financial and environmental concerns.
